Abstract: BAYAN, MARIA KRYSTEL C. Diffusion of Technology to Banana Farmers in Upland Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management, major in Agribusiness. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2007. Adviser: Ms. Estrelita D. Corpuz. The study was conducted in six selected municipalities of upland Cavite, namely: Alfonso, Amadeo, Gen. Aguinaldo, Mendez, Silang and Tagaytay City from December 2006 to February 2007. It was conducted to determine the diffusion of technology to banana farmers in upland Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of banana farmers in upland Cavite; describe the farming practices adopted by farmers; determine their sources of information; identify the additional information and skills they need; identify their preferred sources of information; and identify the problems they encountered. One hundred twenty banana farmers comprised the respondents of the study. Data were gathered through personal interviews with the use of the prepared questionnaires. Mean, frequency count, range, percentage and ranking were used to analyze the data. Majority of the respondents were 52 years old, male, married, with a household size of five persons in the family, high school graduates, and considered farming as source of income. The respondents owned the lands they till with an average farm size of 12,225 square meters. They practiced multiple cropping systems and grew other fruit crops aside from bananas. The pre-planting practices of the banana farmers included variety selection, land preparation, and propagation. They planted during the month of May and followed a distance of 3x3 meters between plants. Other practices adopted by farmers were fertilizer application, desuckering, and weed control. There were pests and diseases affecting banana but the farmers could not identify them and their causes. Termination of infected plants was their control measure for pests and diseases. They harvested their bananas manually. After harvesting the fruits, some farmers sold their produce per bunch or "banana stem" basis. The respondents' sources of information were their parents, dealers and experiences. The respondents were not interested in acquiring any additional information/skills on banana farming. The survey showed that they were satisfied with what they already know. They did not have any contact with any agricultural extension agent. The presence of pests and diseases topped among the problems enumerated by the respondents.
