Abstract: FERRER, AMME P. Predictors of Academic Performance in Chemistry of Freshmen BS Nursing Students SY 2006-2007 Of Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Master’s Graduate Thesis. Master of Arts in Education major in Science Education. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2007.Adviser: Dr. Alice M. Rodrin. This study determined the predictors of academic performance in Chemistry of freshmen nursing students at Cavite State University for SY 2006 — 2007. Specifically, this aimed to answer the following questions. What are the students' personal characteristics in terms of. age, gender and. sibling order?; 2 What are the students' psychological characteristics in terms of self-concept and study habits attitude?; 3. What are the family characteristics of the students in terms of parents' socio — economic status, family size and family completeness?; 4. What are the students' level of multiple intelligence in terms of natural strength, musical strength, logical strength, existential strength, interpersonal strength, kinesthetic strength, verbal strength intrapersonal strength and visual strength?;5. What is the students' academic performance? ;6. What is the degree of relationship between students' personal characteristics, psychological characteristics, family characteristics, level of multiple intelligences with the academic performance? The respondents, composed of 200 freshmen students taking up nursing for the first semester of SY 2006-2007, were selected through random sampling. Four questionnaires were used to gather the data needed in this study. These were: Personal Data Sheet, Self-concept Rating Scale, Study Habit Attitudes and Multiple Intelligence Survey. Final grades in General Chemistry with Organic Chemistry (Chem 6) were the basis of student-respondents' academic performance in Chemistry. The student-respondents were mostly females, 17 years old and first born- Regarding the psychological characteristics, the respondents were characterized to have high self-concept and moderately favorable study habits attitude. In terms of family characteristic, the respondents belong to the low middle class socio-economic status. Majority of them came from a medium-sized families with their parents living together. Natural, musical, logical, kinesthetic, interpersonal, verbal, and visual were all dominant intelligences to the students’ respondents. Existential and intrapersonal were found to be more dominant. Majority of the student-respondents had satisfactory academic performance. A significant relationship was established between gender, self-concept and multiple intelligences (natural, musical, logical, existential, kinesthetic, verbal, intrapersonal and visual). Therefore, these variables were considered to be the predictors of academic performance in Chemistry. Age, Sibling order and interpersonal intelligence had no significant relationship with the respondents' academic performance. The result of multiple regression analysis revealed existential intelligence, musical intelligence and gender greatly affected the student's academic performance in Chemistry.
