"Correlation of National Elementary Assessment Test (NEAT) Performance and Entrance Examination Performance to Academic Performance of the First Year High School Students of Don Severino Agricultural College(DSAC), SY 1994-1995" Adviser: Dr. Cristeta M. Montano Objectives: General: To investigate the relationship of NEAT performance and entrance examination performance to academic performance the first year high school students of DSAC, SY 1994-1995. Specific: This study aimed to: 1) Evaluate the differences in the academic performance when the respondents are grouped according to age, sex, and family income. 2) Evaluate the differences in the NEAT performance when the respondents are grouped according to of age, sex, and family income. 3) Evaluate the differences in the entrance examinationwhen the respondents are grouped according to age, sex, and family income. 4) Determine the correlation between academic performance and NEAT performance of the respondents. 5) Determine the correlation between academic performance and entrance examination performance of the respondents. 6) Determine the correlation between the weighted combination of performances in NEAT and entrance examination and academic performance of the respondents. Results 1. The profile of the respondents according to age was more than one half of the respondents were 13 years old and above. Likewise, more than one half of the respondents were female. Most of the respondents had an average family income. 2. The performance in NEAT was moderately high. 3. Most of the NSEC and GSC students' got high scores in their respective entrance examination. 4. The respondents had a fair academic performance during first year high school. 5. All the demographic variables are not related to their performance in the NEAT. 6. Both age and sex were not related to entrance examination performance of the NSEC students while family income is highly significant to entrance examination performance of the NSEC student. All of the three demographic variables are not related to entrance examination performance of the GSC students. 7) Age and family income are not related to academic performance but sex is found to be related to academic performance. Female performed better than male academically. 8) It was found that the two variables had moderate correlation. Such correlation is highly signicant. 9) It was found that the entrance examination performance of the NSEC students correlates with academic performance. The correlation between the two variables was significant. The two variables, entrance examination of the GSC students and academic performance had moderate positive correlation. Such correlation was highly significant. 10) The weighted combination of entrance examination performance of the NSEC students and NEAT performance was highly correlated. Correlations of both combinations were highly significant. There were increases in correlation when combinations of the two predictors were used. On the other hand, the combination of entrance examination performance of the OSC students and NEAT performance was not significant. There was no increase in correlation when combination of the two predictors were used Conclusion In the light of the findings summarized above, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. More than one half of the respondents were 13 years old and below. There were more female first year students than male first year students in DSAC. And most of the first year students of DSAC had an average family income. 2. The first year students had a moderately high performance in the National Elementary Assessment Test (NEAT). 3. Both NSEC and GSC students got high scores in their respective entrance examination. 4. The respondents had a fair academic performance during the first year in high school. 5. Age, sex and family income were not related to NEAT performance. Age and sex were not related to the entrance examination performance of both NSEC and GSC students while family income was found to be related to the NSEC students entrance examination performance, the respondents who have large family income performed best in entrance examination. On the other hand, family income is found to be not related to GSC students NEAT performance. Age and family income were not related to academic performance while female were found to performed better than male in terms of academic performance. 6. The NEAT performance correlates significantly with academic performance of students from both curricitla, The entrance examination of NSEC students correlate with their academic performance. Such correlation was highly significant. Likewise, the entrance examination of the GSC than male first year students in DSAC. Likewise, the entrance examination of the GSC students was found to correlate to academic performance significantly. B. The two variables, namely; NEAT performance and entrance examination performance of both the NSEC students and GSC student were predictors of academic performance. Those who performed high in these two variables were also those who performed high in first year. 9. TherPi, were increases in correlation when combination of NEAT performance and entrance examination performance of NSEC students were used But there was no increase in the correlation when combination of NEAT performance and entrance examination performance of GSC students were used Recommendations: Based on the findings and conclusions arrived at this study, the following are strongly recommended: National Elementary Assessment Test(NEAT) could be given higher weight in admitting students in the high school. 2. Performance in entrance examination could be used as supplement to NEAT performance as basis for admission in the high school. 3. The Administrators, Guidance Counselors, Officer and teachers may use the results of this Admission study in providing conditions favorable to teaching-learning aspects, improving and upgrading competencies, in guiding and assessing students' performance carefully, especially in giving grades. 4. Similar researches may be made regarding the predictive validity of the NEAT performance and entrance examination performance in other high schools to validate the generalizability of the findings of this study. 5. Other studies may be undertaken to enrich the present findings, the correlation of performance in high school to elementary grades, IQ and non-intellective factors like sibling position, type of school, parents' educational attainment, and parents' occupation. 6. It is also recommended that further studies on the correlation of performance in each subject area in NEAT with corresponding performance in each subject area in academic courses be undertaken
