Abstract: NATO, JEFFERSON N. "Demographic Profile, Leadership Ability and Leadership Styles of Student Council Officers in Cavite State University- Main Campus." Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Adviser: Mr. Franco B. Pelayo. This study explores whether or not there is a statistically significant relationship between demographic profile, leadership ability and leadership styles of student council officers in Cavite State University- Main Campus. This research used descriptive method and purposive sampling in collecting data. The instruments used were Leadership Ability Evaluation by Cassell and Stancik and Conyne's Leadership Style Self-Assessment. Spearman Rank, Point Biserial and Chi-Square test statistics were used to statistically treat the data. Eighty (80) elected officers of the student council in six different colleges in Cavite State University- Main Campus school year 2007-2008 were the respondents of the study. Data showed that majority of student council officers practiced the Laissez Faire Style of Leadership - an independent group-centered leadership decision pattern where there is almost complete nondirection of members by the leader. Results gathered from Leadership Ability Evaluation, indicated that 67.5 percent of the respondents were ineffective leaders. There were no significant relationship between demographic profile, leadership ability and leadership styles of the student council officers. Effective leadership is always associated with a careful balance of the three different leadership styles. If the student leaders are only focusing into one, then there is a big chance that their effectiveness as leaders will suffer. Group's performance is related to both the leadership style and the degree of which the situation provides leader with the opportunity to exert influence. Effective leaders create results, attain goal, and realize vision, and other objectives more quickly and at a higher level of quality than ineffective leaders. The quality and style of leadership are critically important in determining the effectiveness of both creative and work groups. Demographic profile could provide little influence to a student's effectiveness as a leader, what matters most is the genuineness in their promise of giving service to the students. From the results gathered, several recommendations were formulated including the use of different leadership styles of the respondents in various situation to meet the needs of the group, organization of more leadership training seminar and regular evaluation of the respondents' performance for the improvement of the leadership ability and leadership styles of the student council officers in Cavite State University- Main Campus.
