This study was conducted to assess the level of English proficiency in terms of grammar and reading comprehension of selected senior and junior nursing students at the Cavite State University for the academic year 2007-2008. Specifically, it aimed to identify the factors affecting the level of English Proficiency of selected senior and junior nursing students of Cavite State University academic year 2007-2008 in terms of demographic profile, English reading materials and level of interest in English related activities; to identify the level of English proficiency in terms of grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension of selected senior and juniors nursing students of Cavite State University academic year 2007-2008 based on English proficiency test; to identify the level of English Proficiency in terms of grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension of selected senior and junior nursing students of Cavite State University academic year 2007-2008 in terms of demographic profile, preference of reading materials and level of interest in English related activities; and to identify the relationship between the level of English proficiency in terms of grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension of selected senior and junior nursing students of Cavite State University academic year 2007-2008 to the following factors such as demographic profile, English reading materials and level of interest in English related activities. The Study was conducted from June 2007 to March 2008. The study used the descriptive method. The respondents of the study were composed of 123 junior and 86 senior nursing students of Cavite State University. The research had two sets of examinations. A self-administered survey question was used to determine the demographic profile of the respondents. A separate English Proficiency Test was used to assess the level of English proficiency of the respondents. The questionnaire was adopted from Perey et, al. 2006.
The main statistical tools used in this study were percentage, mean, spearman rank and point biserial.
Majority of the respondents were 19 years old which was 41.1% of the population. Most of the respondents were female, comprising 71.3% of the total population. The English reading materials most commonly used by the respondents was magazine. Watching English movies, and listening to English music were the activities the respondents were most interested with. The level of English proficiency of the students was rated as satisfactory which described that the basic competence was limited to familiar situations.
It was found out that the respondent’s level of interest in English engaged activities affect their performance in English proficiency. The results further showed that those respondents with higher interest in reading pocketbooks, journals, comics, and pamphlets were highly affected by their performance in English proficiency.
