Abstract: MANTUANO, MICHELLE F. and RAUL M. PEREY. Item Analysis of the Battery Examination Given to Level I] Nursing Students of Cavite State University, School Year 2006-2007. Undergraduate Thesis Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Adviser: Vina V. Velasco, RN. This study aimed to ascertain the difficulty and the discriminability of the items in the questionnaires used during the battery examination. Specifically, it aimed to assess the performance level of Level II Nursing students of Cavite State University on the subjects Primary Health Care, Anatomy and Physiology and Bioethics with Health Economics and STS; identify which topic within each subject can be classified as an easy, average and difficult item; compare the level of difficulty of the subjects given on the battery examination; determine the percentage of good/bad items in the test questionnaires; and determine the relationship of the total number of good items and the total number of correct answers. The study used descriptive research method. The primary sources of data were the files of answer sheets of the 203 Level II Nursing students, which were obtained from the College of Nursing Faculty Office. Strict confidentiality of these documents were maintained. The statistical treatments used were frequencies and percentage and the Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient. Out of the subjects given during the battery examination, Primary Health Care got the highest percentage per item in terms of correct answer with 217 out of the 223 examinees or 97.3%. This was followed by Bioethics with 214 or 96% and lastly, by Anatomy and Physiology subject with 206 correct answers or 92.4%. 26.86% of the 350-item examination fell on the easy level category, 98 or 28% categorically landed on the average level, and 158 items or 63.2% on the difficult level. Comparatively, with the subjects included, Anatomy and Physiology had the highest number of items that can be categorize on the difficult level based on the scores by the students with 57% of the total 350-item test, followed by Primary Health Care subject with 40.67% and lastly, Bioethics with 40%. Primary Health Care had the highest mean score with 82.63 that fell on the easy level. This is due to the closeness of administration of the exam to the schedule of subject in the curriculum which is second year second semester. This was followed by Bioethics with a mean of 54.69, which fell on the average level, Anatomy, and Physiology with 46.94 and fell on the difficult level. This is because Anatomy and Physiology was taken by the examinees a year before the battery examination. The test of relationship showed that 0.978 to 0.839 computed value between scores among subjects included in the battery examination. With these values, it was showed that there were very high relationships among the scores garnered from the different subjects of the examination. And that the range of score that can be gathered or attained by the students from the subjects are not far away from each other as per subject as emphasized from the degree of relationships of the scores. This only suggest that if there is a high number of correctly answered items in Anatomy, there will also be a great number of items answered correctly in Primary Health Care and Bioethics subject.
