Abstract: PARAZA, LANILIYN G., VIADO, GARMIELYN P., and VILLA, KRISTEL CATE L., “Core Competency of 4" Year BS Nursing Students SY 2007- 2008 on Nursing Care of Woman during Normal Labor, Delivery, and Postpartum and Nursing Care for Newborn: A Pilot Study”. Research Problem. Bachelor of Science in Nursing College of Nursing Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Adviser: Dr. Josefina R. Rint. At present, nursing is one of the most in demand curses in the country, thus, it is evident that the number of nursing students increases. Unfortunately, it is a fact that these numbers of aspiring nurses doesn’t clearly show certainty that all are knowledgeable and skilled enough to be competent in their chosen field. Because A pilot study entitled: “Core competency of 4h year BS Nursing students, SY 2007-2008 on Maternal and Child Nursing” was conducted to (a) assess the level of knowledge on Maternal and Child Nursing, (b) assess their perceived skill level on Maternal and Child Nursing gained by the fourth year nursing students Batch 2008 and (c) evaluate the relationship between the level of knowledge and perceived level of skills on Maternal and Child Nursing during pre, intra and post delivery. The study was conducted at the 3™ floor of nursing building in the vicinity of Cavite State University, Indang Cavite, from March 2007 to March 2008. The researchers used 97 respondents, each was given a total of 100-item test questions composed of 2 sets of test questionnaires, a set of 50 items of knowledge and skill on labor and delivery, and another set of 50 items of knowledge and skill on immediate newborn care. The results of this study found out that the students were mostly knowledgeable on concepts concerning after delivery and on immediate newborn needs but they are poor on concepts concerning before delivery, during delivery, and in complications and theories of newborn. The respondents have an Average level of proficiency on assisting after delivery while Fairly competent on assisting newborn but most of them had a Poor competency level on assisting before delivery, assisting during delivery, immediate newborn care, which implies that their competency level still need more time to develop through actual practice. The student’s knowledge and proficiency level were closely related which implies that if the respondents’ level of knowledge were poor, the proficiency level was also Poor.
