Abstract: MARCIANO, VERNON BACANI. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Behavioral Evaluation and Wound Lesion Scoring or Pre-weaning and Post-weaning Piglets in Two-Unit Housing Systems in Selected Backyard Farms in Tanauan, Batangas. Undergraduate Thesis. ADVISER: ALVIN WILLIAM A. ALVAREZ, DVM. The study was conducted to determine the behavior and wound lesion scores of the pre-weaning and post-weaning piglets in two unit housing systems of selected backyard farms in Tanauan, Batangas. Three backyard farms, of which having two pens, were observed from day 0 up to day 35 by direct observation and using the video camera. Statistically, the play behavior and play behavior with walking were the only behaviors considered as significant using the Mean Witney Z-test and the Kruskall Walis/Chi square test. Other behaviors observed such as Nursing Behavior (NB), Play Behavior (PB), Lying (L), Walking (W), Sitting (S), Standing (ST), Standing with Walking (SW), Replacing ( R ), Walk with Headknocks (WHN), Standing Headknocks (SHN), Lying Headknocks (LHN), Sitting Head Knocks (SHN), Lying Feeding (LF), and Standing Feeding (SF) were statistically not significant. Results revealed a good welfare on the pre-weaning period registering a 66.66% total percentage of the criteria ((Lying, Sitting, Explorative Behavior and Stress) while 33.33% comprised the compromised welfare of the piglets as exhibited by the Aggressive and Stereotypies criteria. With regards to the post-weaning period, four (Aggressive, Lying, Stereotypies, Stress) out of the six criteria or 66.66% of the total criteria indicated a compromised welfare as opposed to the 33.33% or two (Sitting and Explorative Behavior) out of the six total criteria echoed a good welfare. Moreover, the scores of wounds revealed that scratches had the highest scores among three (Abscess, Lameness, Open wounds) lesions considered and observed.
