Abstract: DE GUZMAN, DIANE HAZEL U. “Demographic Characteristics and Occupational Stress of Employees in Sykes Asia at Burgundy Corporate Tower Makati City”. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University. April 2009. Adviser: Alma Fatima R. Reyes. The study was conducted to determine the relationship of demographic characteristics and occupational stress of call center agents. A total of ninety seven employees of Sykes Asia were used as respondents. The study was conducted from the month of November 2008 to December 2008 at Burgundy Corporate Tower in Makati. A lifted, modified and validated questionnaire was used as a research instrument of the study. The study determined the demographic characteristics of call center agents of Sykes Asia and the level of their occupational stress. It also evaluated the relationship between demographic characteristics and occupational stress. It found out the most common form of relaxation to reduce the job stress of the employees. The results of the demographic characteristics indicated that majority of the respondents are aged 22 to 25 year old; single; reached college level with a monthly income of twelve thousand a month; contractual; and working in the company for less than a year. The results also revealed that decision latitude or control-related stressor gives the highest level of occupational stress while interpersonal stressor gives the lowest level of occupational stress. In general, demographic characteristics of the respondents have no significant relationship to their occupational stress. However, it was revealed in the study that age is an indicator of occupational stress as well as civil status of the respondents. It showed that younger and single employees tend to have higher occupational stress level. The result also found out that watching movies is the most common form of relaxation to reduce stress by the employees. Moreover, the result of the study provides valuable information on the different occupational stressor present in any kind of work particularly in the call center industry. These occupational stressors when not properly managed can lead to serious problems which is therefore imperative to consider in future studies.
