Abstract: AMBAGAN, FADZRI K., BELTRAN°, DAVE RENZ Q., CONSTATE, JOYCE E Factors Associated With Undernourishment of Children aged 3 To 6 Years in Selected Barangays in Naic, Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2009. Adviser: Mrs. Annie M. Ramos. The study was conducted to determine the factors associated with undernourishment among children aged 3 to 6 years in selected barangays in Naic, Cavite. Specifically, the study described the individual characteristics of children, described the maternal characteristics of the children, determined the breastfeeding practices received by the child during infancy, described the household characteristics of children, and determined whether the individual characteristics of children, their maternal characteristics, the breastfeeding practices they received during infancy, and household characteristics are significantly related to the nutritional status of children. A total of 60 undernourished children were covered in this study selected through purposive sampling. The respondents of the study were mothers/guardians of the children. Chi-square test was used to determine the factors associated with undernourishment. Results revealed that a typical undernourished child aged 3 to 6 years of age in Barangay Balsahan, Barangay Sasahan, and Barangay Halang, Naic, Cavite weighed at least 10 kg with approximately 97 cm high. There was a relatively equal distribution of undernourished girls and boys in the barangays covered. Short birth interval is closely linked to undernourishment among preschool children. Evidence suggests that the undernourishment was highest amongst children born with low weights. This means that children who were very small at birth have a higher probability to be undernourished than children with normal size. Children from low income families are at high risk of undernourishment than children from affluent families. However, no clear evidence was found to suggest that breastfeeding practices are closely related to undernourishment of children.
