Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2009. Adviser: Ms. Joy G. Novero. The study attempted to determine the relationship of family functioning and management strategies of parents with exceptional child in selected areas in Cavite. Specifically, this study aimed to: 1) determine the demographic profile of the parents in terms of age, gender, civil status, employment, monthly family income, type of exceptionality (child) and age of the child; 2) determine the family functions of the respondents in terms of economics, daily care, recreation, and education; 3) determine the management strategies of the parents with exceptional child in terms of self - controlling, seeking social support, escape — avoidance, and positive reappraisal; 4) determine if there is a significant relationship between family functioning and management strategies of parents with exceptional child. This study utilized descriptive — correlational type of research. The two hundred (200) respondents were selected using stratified sampling technique wherein parents (either mother or father) were chosen as the respondents. The Family Functioning questionnaire which was adapted from Family Needs Scale by Dunst et al. (1988) and Management Strategies questionnaire which was adapted from Ways of Coping by Folkman and Lazarus (1985) was used as a measuring tool. The study was conducted in selected schools in Cavite that offer special education program for the school year 2008 — 2009. Spearman Ranked Correlation was used to determine if the family functioning and management strategies of the parents with exceptional child are related or not. Based on results of the study, it was found that there is no significant relationship between family functioning and management strategies of parents with exceptional child. Results indicated that majority (136) of the respondents were female and married. Most of them were thirty six (36) years old and above. Majority of the parents are unemployed with a family income of Php10, 000 to Php15, 999. Most of the respondents' children were aged 8 to 9 years old and most of them are gifted according to their type of exceptionality. It was also revealed that parents always met the needs of their family members despite the presence of an exceptional member in the family. And lastly, results revealed that respondents often used management strategies to manage various situations.
