Abstract: FORMENTERA, RAIZA R. “Manpower Trend in CALABARZON, 1990-2010”. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Ms. Ma. Soledad Mojica Lising. The study was conducted to analyze the manpower trend in CALABARZON from 1990-2010. Specifically, it aimed to: 1) describe the manpower trend in CALABARZON, 1990-2010; 2) compare the manpower of the five provinces in Region IV-A in terms of the size and composition: number of male and female in the labor force, 1990-2010; 3) determine the relationship between the: a. average number of employed by sector and the average income by sector, and b. average number of employed and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), 2001-2010; 4) project the manpower in CALABARZON in the next five years; and, 5) identify the policy recommendations to improve manpower in CALABARZON. Time research design was used in the study with secondary data on the manpower of CALABARZON, 1990-2010 and manpower of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2007, and 2010. Growth rate was used in describing the manpower of CALABARZON, while linear regression was used for five-year manpower projection. Hodrick-Prescott’s filtering technique was used to generate “smoothed” trend series of manpower from 1990-2010. Correlation coefficient was used in determining the degree of relationship between the dependent and independent variables, and One-way Analysis of variance was used in comparing the manpower of the five provinces of Region IV-A. The results of the Hodrick-Prescott’s detrending technique showed the increasing trend of the CALABARZON’s manpower particularly the size and composition in terms of number of employed and unemployed. Meanwhile, employment in the agriculture and service sectors showed a decreasing trend contrary to the trend in the industry sector. One-way Analysis of Variance’s result showed that the manpower of the five provinces in Region IV-A is not different in the total size of manpower, but in different in terms of number of male and female. The Correlation Coefficient test on the relationship between the average number of employed by sector and average income by sector, the agriculture sector showed that a very dependable relationship to the average income, in the industry sector, a moderately dependency was observed, and in the service sector, the result yielded an almost negligible relationship. The test between the average number of employed and GRDP, on the other hand, resulted to a perfect correlation. Moreover, annual increase in the size and composition of manpower and service sector were projected and annual decrease in the agriculture and service sectors. Furthermore, increase in minimum wage, presence of trade unions, and implementation of fixed term contracts are the policy recommendations derived from the study.
