A Research Study (General Science Curriculum), Science High School, College of Education, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2013. Adviser: Prof. Agnes Alimboyoguen. This study entitled "Antibacterial Activity and Isolation of the Chemical Components of Philippine Milk Termite (Coptotermes vastator) Extracts" was conducted to: 1. determine the physical properties of the dichloromethane extracts from Philippine milk termites; 2. determine the chemical components present in Philippine milk termites; and 3. test the antibacterial activity of the dichloromethane extract from Philippine milk termites. The component was isolated using column chromatography and their physical properties were evaluated in terms of odor. color, texture and solubility. Chemical analysis was also determined by identifying the presence of alkaloids, glycosides and saponins from the termite extract. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity was tested using agar well method. The findings revealed that all have a brown color, pungent odor, greasy texture and were non-polar in terms of solubility. The pure extract of termites and the isolate of 30% Acetone in DCM have the presence of Glycosides, while the pure extract of termites and the fraction of 60% Acetone in DCM have the presence of Alkaloids. The mean zone of inhibition of the pure extract against Bacillus subtilis was 16mm, the mean zone of inhibition of the pure extract against E. Coli was 17.33mm, and in Microccocus sp., the mean zone of inhibition of the pure extract was 25mm. Based on these results, only glycosides and alkaloids were present from termite extract and it exhibited low antibacterial activity.
