Abstract: Alegre, Edmark V., Cresino, John Rainier C., Feraer, Alexis R., Mojica, Joie A., Applied Research 11:1 (General Science Curriculum) Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, March 2001 "Extraction and Characterization of Oil from Mahogany Seeds" Adviser: Mrs. Ma. Corazon V. Herrera Prof. Dulce L. Ramos The study entitled "Extraction and Characterization of Oil from Mahogany Seeds" was generally conducted to extract and determine the physical and chemical properties of oil from mahogany seeds. It also aimed to identify the chemical constituents of the oil using phytochemical analysis. Oil from mahogany seeds was obtained using the Soxhlet apparatus. The percentage yield of oil obtained was 1.83%. The physical and chemical analysis of the extracted oil was done to characterize the chemical constituents of the oil. The oil extracted from the seeds had a creamy turbid oily appearance having a fungent odor. The oil was also yellowish in color. Analysis of the oil showed that the oil has a specific gravity of 0.7464, acid value of 1.64 and saponification level of 28.45. The solubility of the oil extracted showed that the oil extracted is clearly soluble in 5.5 volumes up to 10 volumes of 80% ethanol. Phytochemical Analysis was used to identify the chemical component of the oil. Extracted oil from mahogany seeds indicated traces of sterols, triterpenes, and alkaloids.
