March 2001. “EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ESSENTIAL OIL FROM THE LEAVES OF LITLIT” (Piper Retrofractum Vahl)”. Adviser: PROF. FE N. DIMERO
The study was conducted to: (1) Extract essential oil from the leaves of litlit; (2) determine the physical properties of the oil; and (3) identify the chemical constituents of the oil from the leaves of litlit.
A yellow oil having a strong odor and a bitter taste was extracted from the leaves of litlit, The mature and fresh litlit leaves yielded 0.5% essential oil. . The specific gravity of the essential oil obtained was 0.31.
The chemical constituents of the extracted essential oil from the leaves of litlit based on this layer chromatography were the following: piperine, sytvatine, guineensine, piperlonguminine, piperlongumine, filfiline, methyl piperate, limolene and phelandrene.
