Abstract: FULGENCIO, ABEL J. Assessment of the Existing Land Use and Water Quality in Labac River System. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Prof Noel A. Sedigo. The study was conducted in Labac River Watershed and Cavite State University from February to March 2013. The study aimed to characterize the existing land use and the water quality of Labac River System. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) describe the current existing land use of the Labac River System; (2) characterize the physico-chemical characteristics of the river water; and (3) identify problems and issues affecting the ecological integrity of Labac River System. Delineation of watershed boundary, river flow, and designation of sampling points were done using ARCMAP 10.0 following the standard protocol for watershed delineation. Land use classification was done using Google Earth@ images dated 2010. Classification of land use was based on the existing Physical Framework Plan (2005 — 2010) of the Province of Cavite. Physical and Chemical characteristics analyses of river water (temperature, color, clarity, TSS, pH, DO, and BOD) were done using the recommended water quality sampling in 15 sampling sections of Labac River System. The on-site water sampling activities were done at the exact particular time and date while, laboratory analysis was done at the Department of Animal Science located in Cavite State University. A total of 15 key informants from different barangays covering the river system was surveyed about river use, and problems/issues related to the river in the area. The Labac River System stretches for about 30 kms which starts from Mendez down to Naic. It had two directional flows covering the municipalities of Mendez, Indang, and the lowland community of Naic. There were six classified land uses determined using Google Earth® images (agriculture land, grassland, forest, built-up area, and bare land). Generally, the entire Labac River System had a mean cold temperature (24°C); alkaline water (7.2); sufficient DO (7.32mg/L); fair BOD (4.39mg/L); and high TSS (79.25mg/L). Communities of Mendez, Indang, and Naic had different uses of the river. Majority of the key informants answered washing and bathing in the river. It was followed by watering of plants using the river water. Most of the problems and issues determined from the key informants were about soil erosion followed by dumping of garbage in the river system. Based on the results in determining land use, physical and chemical quality of river water, and problems and issues related to the river in the area. It was found that water quality values varied from every sampling sites of the river system. It was also found out that the land uses in the different sites of the river system may be responsible of the problems identified such as soil erosion and caused high suspended load of the river. Overall, compared to the results gathered by Dimero in 2009, minimal changes were identified such as increase in temperature, pH, and DO. It indicated that the Labac river system is still healthy and can sustain aquatic species.
