Abstract: GUEVARRA, ARIEL C., Comparative Analysis of Reinforced Concrete, Wide Flange, Wide Flange Post, Composite and Frame Type Columns for Gas Station Canopy. Graduate School Narrative Report. Master of Engineering Major in Structural Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. November 2014. Adviser: Engr. Marcelino Dagasdas Jr. The study entitled Comparative Analysis of Reinforced Concrete, Wide Flange, Open Web, Composite and Frame Type Columns for Gas Station Canopy was carried out from November 2013 to October 2014. The study was conducted to extensively addressed the typical failure mode problem of canopy structures under high winds. A large number of such structures suffered from catastrophic damages during typhoons and has been observed pulling out of the entire canopy roof framings, sway collapse, collapse of the roof and plastic hinge formation at the base of the columns followed by rigid body rotation of the canopy. To address this problem, a thorough and imperative analysis and design of structures of various types were done using the most reliable structural design software available in the market such as STAAD Pro and RAM Structural. This was conducted to determine which among five (5) types of canopy structures is cost efficient, structurally sound, and which column with enough space to accommodate utilities (e.g. downspout, electrical lines, etc.) that will not cause negative effect on the structure. In this study, the tabulation of comparative analysis result was made to establish which among the said five (5) types of structures is highly recommendable the study revealed the frame type canopy structures was the most advantages in terms of cost effectiveness, structure’s reliability and integrity and maintenance accessibility
