Abstract: LAGAC, AKIKO P. Optimism Level and Self Worth of Male Prisoners at Cavite Provincial Jail in Trece Martires City. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University. April 2012. Thesis Adviser: Ms. Alma Fatima R. Reyes. This study was conducted to find out the relationship between optimism level and self- worth of male prisoners at Cavite Provincial Jail in Trece Martires City. The study aimed to determine the: (a) optimism level of the respondents, (b) self- worth level of the respondents in terms of appearance, God's love, family support, approval from others, competition and virtue; and (c) if there is a significant relationship between optimism level and self- worth of the respondents. The study used descriptive correlational method to correlate optimism level and self- worth. Likewise, this study also used random sampling design to determine the respondents of the study. There were 232 respondents. The respondents were male prisoners from Cavite Provincial Jail. In determining the optimism level of the respondents, a lifted instrument was used. To be able to measure the self -worth of the respondents, a lifted instrument was also used by the researcher. Result of the study revealed that male prisoners at Cavite Provincial Jail have very low optimism level. This means that they are doubtful of the future and have negative outlook in life. They also feel inadequate or inferior and account failures to personal setbacks. They usually expect the worst in life and give up easily without trying. Moreover, they are more likely to be depressed and anxious. It was also found out that the respondents have low sense of self -worth. This actually means that they view themselves as persons of value but there are some negative aspects that they view of themselves. Generally, the study pointed out that there is no significant relationship between optimism level and self -worth of the respondents. Self -worth is not a dimension of optimism of an individual.
