Abstract: JOSE, JOYEN C. Industrialization Across Southeast Asian Countries. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics major in Business Economics. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. April 2015. Adviser: Ms. Maria Soledad M. Lising Industrialization plays an important role in the nation's economic growth and development. The study used secondary data from 1983-2013 which were gathered from the official website of central bank of each of the Southeast Asian countries, official website of the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, International Monetary Fund, and other institutions concerned in the study. The study employed quantitative analysis approach to determine the level of industrialization across Southeast Asian countries by determining the contribution of industry and manufacturing to GDP and total employment. Results revealed that each country in Southeast Asia is open to trade with other countries. Singapore recorded the highest average share of total export and import to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), followed by Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines. The value of manufacturing in almost Southeast Asian countries follows an upward trend but fluctuations were observed. It was also found that the size of domestic market represented by the population is continued to increase across the region. In the historical trend of the performance of industry and manufacturing value added, solid evidence can be drawn that performance of each country of Southeast Asia differed significantly. Industry as well as manufacturing play important role in contributing to the GDP and total employment. But in spite of its significant role, it was not considered as the main contributors on the countries' GDP and total employment. Industrialization is not yet achieved fully in almost all Southeast Asian countries except Singapore whose economy is retiring from industrialization and switching to service economy. The employment generated by the industry and manufacturing followed an upward trend although slight fluctuations were observed. The study recommends further investigation on the level of industrialization across Southeast Asian countries considering other important variables like investment, research and development, and inflation. The author also recommends that more statistical measures should be made to fully understand and analyze the data concerning the study. Also, diagnostic test should be employed to see what model will fit the study.
