Abstract: VELASCO, MELISSA P. Income and Employment of Female Headed Households in Selected Upland Areas of Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Economics. Cavite State University Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Dr. Elizabeth E. Polinga. The study was conducted in five selected upland areas of Cavite, namely: Alfonso, Indang, Mendez, Trece Martires City and Tagaytay City. This aimed to determine the socio-economic characteristics of female headed households; determine the level of income of the female headed households; determine the extent of contribution of income of female head of the family to their family income; determine the status of employment of female headed households; determine the relationship between socio-economic characteristics of income and employment status of female headed households; identify the problems encountered by female headed households in the allocation of income and regard to their employment. A total of 100 respondents were interviewed to gather the needed information. The average age of the participants was 37 years. Sixty six percent were married, 19 percent were single and only six percent were widow. Most of the participants were holders of bachelor's degree. The number of dependents ranged from 1 to 6 with an average of 3. The average household size was 4. The monthly income of the participants ranged from P2,400 to P65,000. With an average of P15,715. The percentage contribution of the participants to their family income ranged from 80-100% with an average of 85.73%. Almost 43 percent of the participants were employed in private agencies. Majority of the participants were engaged in service sector, 64 percent and only one percent in agricultural sector. There were 60 percent holders of permanent appointments, while 13 percent were contractual. Only five percent holds temporary appointments. Among the socio-economic characteristics, age and educational attainment were found to be significantly related with income. Types of employment and nature of work were found to be significantly related with socio-economic characteristics such as age and educational attainment. It was also found that nature of appointment was significantly related with socio-economic characteristics such as age, civil status and length of service. The findings revealed that the most common problems encountered by the participants in terms of income and employment were low salary and increasing needs of the family.
