Abstract: DEL ROSARIO, KRISTEL MAE M., AND SIERRA, ARA MINA M., Health Profile and Incidence of Hyperglycemia among Young Adults at Selected Urban and Rural Municipalities in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. October 2016. Adviser: Ms. Karen Krista M. Escobar. The study entitled "Health profile and Incidence of Hyperglycemia among Young Adults at Selected Urban and Rural Municipalities in Cavite", was conducted at the Department of Medical Technology Laboratory, College of Nursing from November 2015 to December 2015. The objective of the study were (1) to determine the profile of participants as to: age, gender, BMI, history of diabetes in family and lifestyle such as diet, physical activities, smoking, alcohol intake, medication and stress level; (2) to determine the percentage of the random population of young adults having normal and high glucose levels; (3) to determine the relationship between the health profile and incidence of hyperglycemia; (4) determine which among the health profile highly contribute to the status of hyperglycemia of the young adults; and (5) to determine the significant difference of the incidence of hyperglycemia in selected urban municipalities (Imus and Dasmariñas) as compared to rural municipalities (Naic and Indang) of Cavite. A total of 120 young adult respondents were the final population of the study. All of the respondents gave their consent, and responded to the questionnaire, which constituted the study population. The respondents were asked to undergo fasting for eight to ten hours and tested for fasting blood glucose level, for three consecutive weeks, after the third week, if the respondent still had high fasting blood glucose level, then Oral Glucose Tolerance Test will be administered, which is the confirmatory test. The study showed that the percentage of the sample population with normal blood glucose is higher than those who had high blood glucose. The health profile of the participants such as age, gender, BMI, history of diabetes, servings of fruit and vegetables, and medication were the factors considered in determining the possibilities of having high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia). Among the health profile, including the symptoms, high fat intake, and alcohol, stress had the highest effect for the young adults to acquire hyperglycemia. The findings showed that the age ranges between 36-39 years old, female, with normal BMI, no history of diabetes in the family, and no symptoms had the highest result of high glucose level. The selected rural municipalities had the higher incidence of hyperglycemia than the urban selected municipalities, but the data revealed that there is no statistically significant difference in the incidence of hyperglycemia in selected rural and urban municipalities. The incidence of hyperglycemia nowadays is currently increasing. This study therefore recommends that further study should be about the diabetic care program for those patients having diabetes. Due to the increasing incidence of hyperglycemia in younger ages, this study also recommends that further and follow up studies should be focused on the primary prevention thru health education in primary and secondary care setting on lifestyle factors that affect the increase of blood sugar and to assess treatment that will prevent the increase of incidence of hyperglycemia.
