The study entitled “Phytochemical Analysis and Antimicrobial Properties of Petroleum Nut (Pittosporum resiniferum) Bark Extracts” was conducted to characterize and evaluate the bark extract of petroleum nut. Specifically, it aimed to: determine which solvent can dissolve the dichloromethane fractions of the bark of petroleum nut; identify the phytochemical constituents present from the bark of petroleum nut; and test the antimicrobial properties of dichloromethane (DCM) extract from the bark of petroleum nut. The barks of petroleum nut were gathered from La Trinidad, Benguet. Tools and equipment, along with the materials necessary in conducting the study were obtained from the Research Center Laboratory, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Laboratory, and Department of Biological Sciences Supply Room, Cavite State University.
The isolates were obtained using column chromatography. Phytochemical analysis was also determined by identifying the presence of flavonoids, glycosides, saponins and terpenoids. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity was tested using disk
diffusion method.
Results showed that all the ten fractions from dichloromethane extracts were soluble in both dichloromethane (DCM) and petroleum ether. Further, results revealed that only terpenoid were present in all the isolates.
Statistical test also revealed that among the ten dichloromethane fractions of dichloromethane extract from the bark of petroleum nut, 70% Acetone in DCM showed the best antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli while 90% Acetone in DCM showed the best antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
