BAYOT, ALDOUS JOSHUA Q., DACAYAN, JAN ERIS C., RODERNO, VON FREDRICK P. Performance Evaluation of a Reverse Osmosis Machine Using Banana Peels and Coconut Shells as Semi-permeable Membranes. Research Study
(General Science Curriculum) Science High School, College of Education, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2016. Adviser: Engr. Renato B. Cubilla
The study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the reverse osmosis machine using banana peels and coconut shells as semi-permeable membranes. The purpose of the study was to: (1) determine the quality of the filtered water in terms of the following: pH level, total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria, heterotrophic plate count, and hardness; (2) determine the difference between the quality of the filter water and river water, and (3) determine the acceptability of the filtered water us drinking waiter. The coconut and banana were bought from the Indang Public Market. Samples of never water were obtained from Saluysoy River in Bancod, Indang, Cavite. The sedimentary filter, delivery pump, filter container and faucet was bought from Handyman Hardware Store. The equipment was assembled by the researchers.
The banana peels and coconut shells served as membrane for the device. The banana peels were cleansed and heated in an oven. The coconut shells were also cleansed 7 and then heated in a furnace. Both materials were pounded and placed in filter containers for the reverse osmosis device. The produced reverse osmosis device filtered the river water and filtered water samples were collected and tested.
The evaluation was done by the Department of Science and Technology - Cavite Water and Wastewater Testing Laboratory, Trece Martires City. Results showed that the device was able to make a significant difference between the river water and filtered water. However, the device could not filter enough to produce a safe drinking water
