ASTUDILLO, SIR FERDIE A. Contribution of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) to the Economic Growth of the Philippines, 1990 - 2013. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics, major in Business Economics. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. October 2015 Adviser: Mr. Marlon A. Mojica.
A study was conducted to determine the contribution of MSMEs to the economic growth of the Philippines from 1990 — 2013. Specifically, it was also conducted to determine — the number of MSMEs and its contribution to the total number of business establishments; the number of employment generated by MSMEs and its contribution to the total employment; the income of MSMEs and its contribution to the total income of business establishments; tax collected from MSMEs and its contribution to the total tax; value of exports of MSMEs and its contribution to the total export; and the value of gross domestic product brought by MSMEs and its contribution to total gross domestic product of the Philippines from 1990 — 2013.
Results of trend analysis showed that the number of MSMEs, employment, income of MSMEs, corporate tax, exports, and GDP brought by MSMEs showed an increasing trend. This also showed that MSMEs contributed 99.56 percent in the total number of business establishments, 7.85 percent in the total employment, 24.82 percent to the total income of businesses, 13.57 percent in the total tax, 24.07 percent in the total. exports, and 9.32 percent in the total gross domestic product.
The data were regressed to determine the possibility of association of the said variables to economic growth. Results of the regression show that the employment and income of MSMEs had positive relationships with the gross value added of MSMEs, while tax has a negative relationship with the gross value added of MSMEs. The number and exports of MSMEs were found to be insignificant at five percent level. The coefficient determination (R’) was 0.883 which implies that 88.3 percent of the variations in the values of gross value added of MSMEs were explained by the predicting variables used in the model.
The result of the regression showed that economic growth is positively associated with income and employment of MSMEs while tax was negatively associated. Results of the regression also showed that MSMEs were insignificantly (Sig.>0.10) associated with economic growth in terms of number of business establishments (Sig. = 0.430) and exports (Sig. = 0.117) of MSMEs.
