Abstract: APOSTOL, AIMEE JOY T., ARMIJO, RONALYN JOY T., ASCANO, RACHEL ANNE S. Appraisal and Barriers to Clinical Performance Among Cavite State University BSN Level IV Students SY 2011-2012 in affiliated Tertiary Hospitals. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April, 2012. Adviser. Mrs. Nenita B. Panaligan RN, MAN. . The study was conducted to investigate the appraisal and barriers to clinical performances among CvSU BSN level IV students SY 2011-2012 in affiliated tertiary hospitals. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1) Determine the demographic profile of the students in terms of age, gender and clinical performance (RLE grade) in Medical-Surgical Nursing; 2) Determine the adequacy of exposure in the application of nursing skills in the different affiliated tertiary hospitals in terms of: a) Fundamentals of Nursing b) Maternal and Child Nursing c) Medical and Surgical Nursing d) Operating Room Skills e) Pharmacological Nursing f) Therapeutic Communication Skills g) Documentation Skills ; 3) Determine the extent of barriers to clinical performance encountered by the students in terms of school-related, hospital-related, clinical instructor-related and student-related barriers, 4) Determine which among the identified four (4) barnes significantly affect the clinical performance of nursing students. The study utilized the descriptive survey method to answer the research problem and to describe the population in terms of the extent in difference. This involves frequency, average, and percentages used to answer the objectives of the study. The results revealed that the age of the respondents ranged from 19 to 26 and above and majority of them were aged 19. Female respondents outnumbered the male respondents. Furthermore, most of the respondents earned an RLE grade of 2.00-2.99 indicating a good performance. In terms of the adequacy of exposure, generally, the level IV nursing students are highly adequate in terms of the exposure in therapeutic communication skills and documentation skills while they are adequately exposed to fundamentals of nursing skills, medical-surgical nursing skills and pharmacological skills. Furthermore, they have less adequate exposure in maternal and child nursing skills and operating room skills. Concerning on the extent of barriers t clinical performance, generally, the school-related, hospital-related, clinical instructor-related and student-related barriers affect their clinical performances to a very little extent hence, the extent of barriers significantly affects the clinical performances of nursing students. Moreover, there is a significant relationship between the degree of exposure and the clinical performances of nursing students. It was given an emphasis that the clinical exposure in actual settings play an important role in better acquisition of the theoretical knowledge in the course of nursing. In this way the information becomes more significant to a learner. Learning as a process needs to be well supported in order for it to attain efficiency. Every nursing institution should realize the value of having adequate exposure in sustaining the students with a more effective learning experience as to provide the society with competent and more reliable future nurse professionals.
