Abstract: ABDULDFATTAH, ABDUSSALAAM A., BONDAL, CZARINA PAULINE V., AND DIAZ, ELISA JEAN A. The Association of the Severity of COVID-19 and Preexisting Respiratory Conditions of COVID-19 Patients in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Biology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2022. Adviser: Prof. Ma. Veronica P. Pefiaflorida. This study was conducted from April to May 2022 in the Province of Cavite to determine whether there is a significant association in between the severity of the patient state of COVID-19 patients and their pre-existing respiratory conditions. Specifically, the study aimed to answer the following questions: I . What is the profile of the respondents in terms of a) age, b) sex, and c) COVID-19 manifestation?; 2. What is the severity of the COVID-19 patient's state based on the Ordinal Scale of Clinical Improvement?; 3. What are the pre-existing respiratory conditions among the COVID-19 positive patients?; 4. is there a significant association in between the patient state and pre-existing respiratory conditions of COVID-19 patients in Cavite?. The researchers have opted for a descriptive epidemiological study in order to fulfill the paramount objectives of the study. As per the Cochran Sample Size Determination for Infinite Population with the z-score of 1.96 at a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error, the researchers have settled for 385 respondents to represent the indefinite number of COVID-19 positive patients with pre-existing respiratory conditions in Cavite. The data that was gathered has exhibited a median per ungrouped data of 36 with the range of 96 in between the youngest respondents, with the age Of 2, and the oldest respondents with the age of 98. The majority of the respondents are between the ages of 32-41 which involves 107 respondents which makes up 27.8% of the population. The respondents' demographic in terms of sex had also revealed a 5:4 ratio in the distribution of COVID-19 positive patients with pre-existing respiratory conditions consisting of 213 (55.3%) male respondents and 172 (44.7%) female respondents. Meanwhile, the frequency of the asymptomatic respondents is 115 with the percentage of 29.9%, while the percentage of symptomatic respondents is 70.1% with the frequency of 270. The no limitation of activities and the limitation of activities are considered Ambulatory patients' state and corresponds to percentage of 23.6% of the population. The hospitalized with no oxygen therapy and the patient state with the oxygen by mask or nasal prongs are considered as hospitalized with mild disease and had yielded a percentage of 70.9% of the population, deeming it the majority of the patients' state. Meanwhile, the non-invasive ventilation or high-flow oxygen is deemed as hospitalized with severe disease makes up 5.5% of the population. The most severe patient states, which involves intubation and mechanical ventilation as well as ventilation with additional organ support such as pressors, RRT and ECMO, were not experienced by any of the respondents. The majority of the respondents with preexisting respiratory conditions have Asthma which has the frequency of 185 and percentage of 48.10/0, followed by Pneumonia with the frequency of 41 and percentage of 10.6% of the population. And as per the statistical analysis, the Pearson Chi-Square Test for Independence have yielded a value of 13.240 with a p-value of 0.010 which had led us to reject the null hypothesis. Hence, with the 95% confidence level, we can conclude that there is a significant association in between the said variables.
