Abstract: VIDAL, MELANIE BARRED°. Demand Analysis for Milkfish in Selected Areas of Cavite. BS Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Economics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2004. Adviser: Mr. Romeo C. Navarro. The study aims to analyze the demand for milkfish in selected areas of Cavite. Specifically, the study was conducted to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of the milkfish consumers in selected areas of Cavite; identify the factors affecting the demand for milkfish; ascertain the relationship between the identified factors and the quantity demanded for milkfish; determine the problems encountered by the consumers in buying milkfish and formulate possible solutions to solve the problems of consumers in buying milkfish. The study was conducted from December to February 2004 in five areas of Cavite, namely: Amadeo, General Aguinaldo, Mendez, Tagaytay City, and Trece Martires City. A total of 250 respondents were used in this study. Data were gathered through personal interview with the consumers of milkfish with the aid of the prepared interview schedule. The data gathered were analyzed using frequency count, mean, range, percentage and rank. The multiple linear regression analysis (full model and stepwise regression) was used to determine the relationship of the identified factors affecting the demand for milkfish and the quantity demanded for .milkfish. Majority of the consumers were middle-aged with an average age of 42 years and were married. The average size of household is five. Generally, the consumers had higher level of education and had an average monthly income of P10, 621.32. Results showed that most of the consumers substituted tilapia for milkfish. The quantity demanded for milkfish were significantly affected by the price of rice and household size. On the contrary, the quantity demanded for milkfish was not significantly affected by its own price, gross family income and average price of substitute goods. The foremost problem encountered by the consumers was the poor quality of milkfish purchased. The consumers suggested that there should be representative from the respective municipalities to check the quality of milkfish being sold in the market. The study revealed that milkfish is an important part of the Filipino diet so whatever the price and income the consumers received, they are still willing to purchase it.
