This study was conducted at the College of Nursing, Cavite State University Indang, Cavite from January to March 2007 to determine the cause and effect of alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking in the academic performance of CvSU nursing students from second to fourth year levels. Specifically, it aimed to identify the number of nursing students engaged in alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking, identify the factors that influence nursing students to engage alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking, determine the reasons why nursing students engage in alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking and determine the relationship of smoking and alcohol drinking with the academic performance of the student respondents. A survey was conducted through the use of a survey questionnaire. Non-probability sampling was used to identify the respondents in each year level. A total of 502 respondents as the sample size were taken using Slovin's formula. Data were analyzed using descriptive method in assessing the academic performance of the students who engage in alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking. Likewise, statistical measures such as frequency, percentage, range and average were used. A Likert scale was also used in this study and was analyzed using the Pearson formula in determining the correlation ships of alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking in the academic performance of the CvSU nursing student, the influential factors, and the reasons why they engage in this vices. In terms of the relationship of academic grades and alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking, it was found that drinking has a negative effect on the academic performance in terms of academic grades of the CvSU nursing students at 0.005 level of significance; but in terms of cigarette smoking, test shows that smoking does not affect the academic performance of the CvSU nursing students. In terms of the relationship between the influential factors and alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking, it was revealed that friends are the most influential factor to the nursing students who engage in alcohol drinking, while friends do not influence the nursing students whether they engage in smoking or not. In terms of the relationship between the reasons for drinking and smoking and the average consumption of liquor and cigarette, the reason why nursing students engage in drinking do negatively affect the average consumption of either beer or hard liquor of the CvSU nursing students. Results also showed that the reasons why nursing students engage in smoking do have an effect in the average daily consumption of cigarette sticks.
