Abstract: PADILLA, GIL ANDRO R., Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2008. Detection of Haemophilus parasuis in the Lungs of Swine from Mahogany Slaughterhouse Tagaytay City, Cavite. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Heidee Arapol, DVM. The study was conducted to isolate Haemophilus parasuis from lung samples of swine in Mahogany Slaughterhouse Tagaytay City, Cavite. Five hundred presumptive Haemophilus sp. colonies that were characterised as clear, smooth and about 0.5 to 1 mm in diameter that grew near the feeder streak of Staphylococcus aureus on blood agar were isolated from 100 lungs of slaughtered pigs. All were found to be gram negative and rod shape organisms on morphological characterization. On biochemical tests twenty presumptive isolates were found to be urease negative and catalase positive and out of these, three were nitrate positive, while one was indole negative. This remaining isolate fermented glucose without producing gas but failed \ to ferment lactose and sucrose. There was no confirmed H. parasuis in this study on the sampled lungs of slaughtered pigs in Mahogany Slaughterhouse Tagaytay City, Cavite and such, more sensitive detection techniques are warranted in future studies.
