Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2014. Adviser: Prof. Noel A. Sedigo The study was conducted from October 2013 to February 2014 in Labac River Watershed. The general objective of the study was to identify and characterize the fish species in Labac River Watershed. Specifically, it aimed to: 1. identify the areas in Labac River with fish population; 2. determine the physico-chemical properties of Labac River; 3. identify and characterize the fish species inhabiting Labac River; 4. determine which of the fish species are for human consumption and for commercial purposes; and 5. identify the problems and issues concerning the fish population in the area. Labac River Watershed was divided into Western nand Eastern rivers. Fifteen observation stations were established in the study area. Seven observation stations were established in Eastern Labac and seven observation stations in Western Labac. One common observation station was established in Balsahan. Survey interview among fishermen in the area, identification, and characterization of fish specids were done. The physico-chemical properties of the river were determined. The Labac River starts in Indang and is situated at 14.9'1.96" North and 120.54'24.09" East. It extends to Naic and occupies the land area at 14°19'26.52" North to 120°45'25.77" East. The river traverses the City of Tagaytay and the towns of Mendez, Indang, and Naic and part of Trece Martires City. For the physico-chemical properties of Labac River, pH ranged from 6.4 to 8.9; DO ranged from 3.9 to 8.2 mg/L; temperature ranged from 26.1 to 30.7 °C; depth ranged from 0.5 to 8 m; and velocity ranged from 12 to 67 cm/sec. The study identified 26 fish species. However, interviews of local fishermen revealed that there are more or less 31 species of fishes in the river. Out of the 26 species identified, 16 were native and 9 were introduced. One was not yet known whether it is native or introduced. Seventeen of the fish species were commonly sold in the local market. Out of the 17 fish species, 15 were used for human consumption and two were ornamental fishes for aquariums. The problems in Labac River reported by local fishermen were garbage and animal wastes dumping by swine farms and residents near the river which affected the water quality in the river and the practice of illegal fishing using sodium cyanide in the last few years that greatly reduced the fish population in the river. No conservation and protection measures were visible in Labac River.
