Abstract: SALAZAR, GERALDINE R. Comparative study of Academic Performance of Applied Mathematics Students for the Last Five Years (2009-2014). Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics with specialization in Statistics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2015. Adviser: Mrs. Jennifer R. Mojica This study entitled "Comparative Study of Academic Performance of Applied Mathematics Students for the Last Five Years (2009-2014)" was conducted at Cavite State University Main Campus from June 2014 to February 2015. Generally, it aimed to compare the academic performance of BS Applied Mathematics students for the last five years (2009-2014). Specifically, it aimed to (1) identify and compare the mean Grade Point Average (GPA) of students per year level from 2009-2014; (2) compare the mean GPA of the students in science and non-science subjects per year level; and (3) determine if there is a significant difference on academic performance of students in terms of (a) year level, and (b) student classification (regular/irregular). Descriptive method was used as a research design in this study. A total of 70 BS Applied Mathematics students served as the respondents. Thirty-four students are regular, and thirty-six students are irregular. The data needed for this study were obtained from the University Registrar and the Department of Physical Sciences. The grades of the respondents in all their subjects from A. Y. 2009-2014 were used. Frequency count was used to determine the number of students per academic year, mean GPA of the students per year level and classification, and their mean GPA on science and non-science subjects. One-way Analysis of Variance was used to determine the relationship between the academic performance of the students and their year level. T-test for independent samples was used to determine the relationship between the academic performance of the students and their classification. Based on the results, generally, students perform better in non-science subjects than science subject since non-science subjects are easier than science subjects. Moreover, there is a significant relationship between the academic performance of the students in terms of their year level and classification. Finally, based upon the result of the study, it was recommended that student should focus on major subjects than the minors because most of them excel in nonscience subjects. Also, future researchers should consider having a bigger sample to make the results more conclusive.
