The project, “Intercropping Corn and Pineapple” was conducted at Barangay Conchu, Trece Martires City, from November 1989 to February 1990. It aimed to gain actual experience and skills in managing a small plantation of pineapple and corn and also to determine the effect of intercropping patterns on the yield of corn.
An existing four month old pineapple plantation was used as the project site. Complete fertilizer at the rate of 100 kilograms per hectare was applied basally. Viable corn seeds were drilled manually in between pineapple plants distanced at 60 centimeters with three seeds per bill.
The corn were harvested four months after planting. The marketable fresh corn ears were sold to the nearest market.
A gross income of P2,325.00 was realized. A net income of P1,210.30 was obtained after the total cost of production was deducted . the growth of pineapple plants was observed to be satisfactory.
