The study was conducted to develop an Android Application for people with communication problems particularly the deaf and mute and people who were born with cleft palate or cleft lips, to help them to communicate easily. Mobile communications today can help, protect, and extend their personal freedom as well as give them more confidence and help them to overcome the barriers their disability posses with the devices that are available nowadays.
The research methodology used in the software development was Extreme Programming (XP); a lightweight discipline of software development based on values of simplicity communication, feedback, and courage. It has four (4) phases namely:
planning, designing, coding, and testing.
In supports of systems development Windows 10 64bit based-processor Operating System was used as the development platform; Android Studio with Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and Java Development Kit (JDK) installed as the mobile application development; Java and XML as the scripting language and Adobe Photoshop CC for the enhancement of the design of the mobile application. For the mobile specification, any smartphones that runs at least Android Jellybean up to Android
Lollipop Operating System and I OOMB ram and 600MB of Memory Space.
The Android Application for People with Communication Problems is composed of five (5) modules: text-to-speech module, speech-to-text module, text and tap module, sign language tutorial module and search module. The software was evaluated using indicators that are rated from one (l) to five (5) wherein 5 is rated as excellent, 4 as very good, 3 as good, 2 as fair and I as poor. The system has passed the criterion and met the objectives and its expected output.
