Abstract: LADINES, LOUIE T. and SURBAN, NOEL C. Men in Black-Pepper (Production of Black Pepper Planting Materials). Enterprise Development Project. Bachelor in Agricultural Entrepreneurship, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2016. Adviser: Professor Analita dM. Magsino. The project was established at the Central Experiment Station Net House # 4, Cavite State University, Main Campus, Indang Cavite. With a capital amounting to Phpl 8,811.50, the project was implemented from July 2015 to January 2016. It aimed to provide opportunity to the students to gain more knowledge and to enhance their skills in the production of black pepper planting materials; harness the entrepreneurial skills of the students in operating and managing an black pepper planting material production enterprise; determine the profitability of production of black pepper planting materials; and identify the problems encountered in black pepper planting material production enterprise. The project involved propagation and maintenance of 2000 black pepper cuttings in poly-ethylene bags and which occupied two-thirds of 100m2 net house. About 75m is utilized for propagating and growing area. Purchase of materials, preparation of net house, potting mix preparation and bagging, purchase/gathering of black pepper cuttings were performed as pre production activities. Hormone treatment, rooting of black pepper cuttings, watering, weeding, application of starter solution, sorting of rooted cuttings were performed as the in production activities. Sorting of black pepper rooted cuttings according to age, number of leaves and health/vigour was done 3-4 months after planting. Ready—for—sale planting materials were displayed separately at the site. Promotion to prospective buyers was done by advertising in the internet and by posting and distribution of flyers. The price of each polybagged planting material ranged from Php35.00 to Php40.00 per plant. During the seven months of the operation, the student-entrepreneur encountered problems such as high mortality rate (59.35%) and inclement weather condition, water scarcity that were easily solved through immediate management strategies. The total cost of production amounted to Php18,811.50. The project gave a net income of Phpl 1,373.50 and a return on investment of 60.46 percent. The student-entrepreneurs realized that close supervision is a must in a nursery business involving rooted cuttings, seedlings and/or planting materials. Daily monitoring of the seedling, particularly, during the early stage of growth initiation should be done. For them, it was a worthwhile experience to gain high return on the money invested. The project turned into a successful enterprise which the student entrepreneurs plan to continue and expand
