The study aimed to determine the production and marketing practices of the cacao growers, identify the post harvest practices, estimate the product 1 on and marketing cost and identify the problems encountered by the farmers.
Data were gathered through personal interview with 35 respondents in three towns of Indang, Mendez, and Alfonso.
Results Of the analysis showed that the majority of the respondents were in their early sixties with an average age of 58. 31. Majority of the respondents had reached high school level of education. The respondents had been in farming for six years. The size of the farm planted to cacao is 0. 41 hectares.
The production practices followed by the farmers were: clearing the area, lining, staking, spacing, preparation of the seedling holes, planting shade trees, planting cacao, weeding, fertilization, controlling of pest and diseases and harvesting.
Some of the post—harvest practices were pod breaking, fermentation, drying, storing, processing, and packaging. The marketing practices used by the cacao growers
include method of sale, place of marketing, mode of payment and pricing. It was reported that the average total cost incurred in producing and selling cacao was P813. 76 which was subdivided into production, post—harvest and marketing cost.
Production cost which Includes cost of hired laborers, fertilizers and pesticides amounted to p 549.4.Post-harvest handling cost which covers cost of labor in marketing and
packaging mater x al amounted to p 31. 99. Non—cash cost amounted to ?41. 66.
It was reported that 15 producers sold an average of 11. 2 ganta of dried beans and 20 producers sold an average of 4,816.25 pieces of chocolate tablets. On the other hand, products given away amounted to p 9. 28 while product consumed at home was estimated to be p 21 .43.
With the total average sale of P 7, 983 .085 and average total cost of 813. 70, the farmers generated an average net income of p 7, 169. 325.Some of the problems encountered by the farmer’s lack of information, presence of pest and diseases, high prices of inputs and unfavorable weather condition.
Furthermore, farmers also encountered problems on postharvest. These were the occurrence of storage pest and molds which lessen the quality of the beans especially when it is intended for processing.
No problem was reported on marketing of the product.
