The farm practice project entitled Urban Vegetable Production Using Discarded Rubber Tires as Growing Beds was conducted in the production area of the Department of Crop Science, Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite from August to December 1996. The project aimed to help the student (a) design and fabricate a growing bed for vegetable production using discarded rubber tires; (b) produce different vegetable crops using discarded rubber tires as growing beds and compost as component of the growing medium; and (c) generate income and determine the profitability of urban vegetable production using discarded rubber tires as growing beds. Two (2) growing beds are made and planted to eggplant, tomato, bell pepper, pechay and bush sitao which yielded 20 kg, 15 kg, 8 kg, 30 kg, and 15 kg, respectively. The project production cost amounted to P 1,673.40, 60.05% of which was spent for labor expenses. The gross income amounted to P 2,585.00 and the net income derived was P 911.60. The return on the investment (ROI) was 37.79%.
