This study, entitled "Synergistic Effect of Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) seed and Aluminum Sulfate against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi" was conducted at the Department of Medical Technology, College of Nursing at Cavite State University Don Severino de las Alas Campus in Indang, Cavite from May 2018 to September 2018. The study was generally intended to determine the synergistic effect of Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) seeds and Alum (Aluminum sulfate) against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the effects of each treatment against E. coli and S. typhi; and determine the most efficient treatment in terms of decrease of bacterial load in 8, 16, 24 hour interval and length of time required to completely eliminate E. coli and S. typhi. Two controls were used in the study: positive control (5% sodium hypochlorite) and negative control. Five treatments were prepared: Treatment 1 (100% watermelon seeds) contains eight grams of watermelon seeds, Treatment 2 (100% aluminum sulfate) contains eight grams of aluminum sulfate, Treatment 3 (50% watermelon seeds and 50% aluminum sulfate) contains four grams watermelon seed and four grams of aluminum sulfate, Treatment 4 (75% watermelon seeds and 25% aluminum sulfate) contains six grams of watermelon seeds and two grams of aluminum sulfate, Treatment 5 (25%) watermelon seeds and 75% aluminum sulfate) contains two grams of watermelon seeds and six grams of aluminum sulfate. The different ratios of watermelon seeds and aluminum sulfate were loaded in the teabags. The result of the study revealed that combined watermelon seeds and aluminum sulfate can decrease bacterial load of E. coli and S. typhi in the water than watermelon seeds or aluminum sulfate alone. Still, its effect was not comparable to the positive control. Treatment 4 (75% watermelon seeds and 25% aluminum sulfate) exhibited the closest value to the positive control in terms of decrease in bacterial load and length of time required to completely eliminate the presence of E. coli in the contaminated water with a remaining bacterial load count of 10.33x106 CFU/ml after 24 hours of treatment application. On the other hand, Treatment 3 (50% watermelon seeds and 50% aluminum sulfate) exhibited the closest value to the positive control in terms of decrease in bacterial load and length of time required to completely eliminate the presence of S. typhi in the contaminated water with a zero (0) count of bacterial load after 24 hours of treatment application.
