Abstract: CASACLANG, MARY JOUIELYN O., and FERRERA, NICOLE ANNE M. Adaption of Green Architecture Concepts at Cavite State University Buildings: A Strategy for Climate Change Mitigation. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Architecture. Cavite State University Indang, Cavite. May 2017. Adviser: Arch. Epitacio A. Olegario, Jr. This research was conducted from August 2016 to May 2017 at Cavite State University, Indang Cavite to apply sustainable design concepts to the selected Cavite State University buildings. Specifically, it aimed to 1. establish building selection criteria for choosing the buildings to be addressed by the study; 2. identify buildings of importance based on the established building selection criteria; 3. use BERDE for Existing Buildings as an assessment tool and identify which categories are applicable for the assessment of buildings inside the main campus; 4. assess and examine the designs of the buildings; 5. identify the strong and weak points on the design of the selected buildings as to their sustainability; 6. identify the measures that can be done to the buildings to improve the quality of human life of users and at the same time reduce their environmental impact and save energy; and 7. present the synthesis on the possible retrofitting on building designs that apply sustainability as recommendations to the University Administration. The authors conducted historical research and applied the process of architectural programming in gathering and analysis of data. Moreover, criteria for building selection include date of construction, floor area and number of stories and importance of each building. Out of 10 major buildings, 4 were selected: Administration Building, College of Nursing Building, Engineering Science Building and University Library. Plans were gathered from the Physical Planning Unit of the University. Assessment upon a walk- through observation was made. In addition to that, survey and interviews were performed. A total of 120 questionnaires were distributed based on the guidelines of BERDE for Existing Buildings. Results were analyzed for statistical probabilities. With this, sustainable design concepts were formulated. Presentation of designs and possible retrofitting were prepared using SketchUp and Photoshop software’s. Based on the BERDE rating system, Administration Building and University Library got 9 points while the College of Nursing Building and Engineering Science Building got 1 1 points. This implies that the four selected buildings did not comply with the requirements of BERDE. It is concluded that the weaknesses of the existing buildings are predominant over its strength Hence, the school personnel should make an effort to inform the persons concerned regarding the issue. With this, the researchers recommend the use of passive cooling design to the four selected buildings for them to be sustainable. The buildings should focus more on natural lighting, ventilation, energy conservation and water consumption. Horizontal louvers, solar panels, canopy and trees can also be used to minimize harmful effects to the environment.
