This study was conducted from March 2021 to June 2022 among selected RHUs in
Cavite in order to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of health care
workers (HCWs) on the TB DOTS Program in selected rural health units (RHUs) in Cavite to
help improve HCWs' service delivery. Specifically, the study aimed to; (a) describe
demographic profile of HCWs from the selected RHUs in Cavite; (b) determine the level of
knowledge of HCWs regarding TB and TB DOTS program; (c) determine the attitude of
HCWs from the selected RHUs in Cavite regarding the TB DOTS program; (d) determine the
practices of HCWs from the selected RHUs in Cavite regarding the TB DOTS program; and
(e) determine the significant difference on the practices of HCWs in TB DOTS program when
grouped by demographic characteristics in terms of age; sex; years of experience;
occupation; TB training and the type of training they underwent.
This study utilized the quantitative-descriptive correlational research design to
describe the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of health care workers (HCWs) on the
TB DOTS Program in selected rural health units (RHUs) in Cavite. A specified criteria was set
by the researchers and convenience sampling was employed in all qualified HCWs based on
the given criteria. A total of 62 participants were qualified for the data gathering.
The research instrument used was adapted and modified questionnaire from the
studies conducted by Kapweya (2010), Mclaughlin (2018) and Okafor (2009). It was self-
administered and disseminated through Google forms. The collected responses have been
analyzed and interpreted.
A total of 62 responses were analyzed, and based on the findings, the majority of
health workers were from age range 30 to 39 years old (38.7%), female (91.9%), have 5 years
or less experience (54.8%), nurses (48.4%), and have undergone training (77.4%), mostly
through orientation (69.4%).
Results revealed that knowledge scores of the 62 participants had an overall mean
score of 10.44 which can be interpreted as High Knowledge. On the other hand, highly
favorable results were obtained from the attitude scores of the participants which discloses a
mean result of 3.2845. Moreover, a mean score of 8.63 was revealed from the participant's
practice scores which can also be interpreted as Good Practice. In terms of practices of health
care workers in the TB DOTS program having a significant difference with the demographic
profile, statistical results revealed that among the age, sex, years of experience, occupation and
TB training of the respondents; sex, years of experience, occupation and TB training obtained
p-values >0.05 and only age, among the age bracket of 20 to 29 years old revealed a result that
is <0.05. In conclusion, among the demographic profile of the respondents only the age (20-29
years old) is deemed to have a significant difference on the practices of HCWs in the TB DOTS
program.
The study was limited only to PhilHealth-accredited RHUs of Cavite, in addition to that,
this study mainly focused on drug susceptible TB. Therefore, these results cannot be
generalized, and future researchers may conduct further studies about KAP Future studies may
focus on drug resistance TB, or more generalize TB studies, not only in Cavite, but also in
different provinces and rural areas in RHUs, accredited or non PhilHealth-accredited with high
TB cases in the Philippines, using a more systematic sampling method or research design.
Furthermore, this study mainly relied on self-reported responses of respondents and not on their
observations and was conducted with the researchers having limited mobility.
