Abstract: DANGAN, STEPHANIE V. Self-Esteem, Personal Values, and Career Preference of Physically Abused and Neglected Children at Bahay Kalinga, Dasmarinas City. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2011. Adviser: Dr. Cecilia B. Banaag. This study was conducted to determine the level of self-esteem, personal values, and career preference of physically abused and neglected children at Bahay Kalinga, Dasmarinas City. Specifically, it aimed to determine the level of self-esteem and the level of personal values of physically abused and neglected children; to determine the career preferences of physically abused and neglected children, and to find out the relationship between the self-esteem and personal values, personal values and career preference, and self-esteem and career preference. This study employed mean and standard deviation in determining the level of self- esteem and personal values of physically abused and neglected children. I used frequency for the career preference of these children; Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient in determining the relationship between self-esteem and personal values and Chi-square in determining the relationship among self-esteem, personal values, and career preference as well as personal values and career preference. The 0.05 level of significance was set for the study. A validated Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale and Personal Inventory were used in this study to measure the level of self-esteem and personal values. It also used self-made career preference list to identify the physically abused and neglected children’s chosen career. Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale was taken from the Morris Rosenberg Foundation, Department of Sociology and Personal Values where the rating scale was modified by the researcher. Based on the data gathered, it could be said that the level of self-esteem of the physically abused and neglected children was low while their personal values were high. As to their career, the children hoped to pursue courses in the field of health and medicine, law enforcement, criminal justice, and the military. A significant relationship was found between self-esteem and personal values. On the other hand, self-esteem and personal values were found not to be significant in relation to the career preference of physically abused and neglected children at Bahay Kalinga, Dasmarinas City.
