Abstract: ALEGRE, RENATO COSARE, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 1999. "IDENTIFICATION OF PERCENTAGE YIELD OF ALKALOID CONTENT FROM THE LEAVES OF BUNGA (Areca catechu Linn.)". Adviser: Ms. Chona Tibayan The extraction, partial purification and identification of percentage yield of alkaloid content from the leaves of Bunga were conducted at the Physical Science experimental Laboratory, Department of Physical Science, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. The general procedure used in the extraction of the plant constituent present in the leaves of bunga was done by treating the sample with 1% hydrochloric acid then boiling it for several minutes. The extractive was treated with ammonia test solution then with the organic solvent, chloroform. The aqueous layer was discarded carrying with it all undesirable materials and pigments. The chloroform extract was evaporated to dryness and further dried in an oven. The residue was analyzed gravimetrically to be able to determine the percentage yield of alkaloid. Furthermore, the residue was subjected to some physical and chemical tests to be able to partially characterize the alkaloid extracted. Meanwhile, the chromatographic isolation of the alkaloid was conducted at the Industrial Technology Development Institute (Irm), Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila. Drops of the chloroform extract were subjected to TLC and were found out that there were two alkaloids present in the sample.
