Abstract: Emelo, Nonilon Pulido, Don Severino Agricultural College, April 1987. "Economic Analysis of Pineapple as a First Crop and Ratoon Crop in Silang, Cavite". Adviser: Mrs. Nelia Feranil. This study was conducted to a) determine and compare the inputs and outputs of first fruiting and ratoon pineapple production; b) determine the management practices employed in first fruiting and ratooning pine- apple; c) determine the relationship between the inputs and outputs and management practices employed in first fruiting and ratooning pineapple; d) determine the problems encountered in pineapple production as an original crop and as a ratoon crop. The list of pineapple growers from the town proper and five barrios were obtained from the respective barangay captains. A total of 100 respondents were included in the study. The same respondents were used as sample for the first crop pineapple production and ratoon crop production. Inputs of pineapple when grown as first crop ranged from P3,825.00 to P109,000.00 with an average of P23,218.18, while when grown as ratoon crop this incurred P2,600.00 to P91,000.00 with an average of P13,821.82. Inputs incurred in the first crop of pine- apple production did not differ from the inputs incurred.in ratoon cropping of pineapple. Both first crop and ratoon crop required almost the same management practices and labor requirements. Outputs of pineapple when grown as first crop ranged from P12,000.00 to P200,000.00 with an average of P46,885.00. When grown as ratoon crop it gave an output ranging from P8,000.00 to P180,000.00. There was no difference with an average of P33,974.00. on the outputs of farmers from the first crop and ratoon in terms of the number of fruits crop of pineapple. being harvested, the ratoon crop gave more fruits than the first crop but the fruits of the first crop were sold at a much higher price than that of the ratoon crop. The reported management practices in the first crop were: land preparation, planting, weeding, fertilizations, application of inducers, decrowning, control of Almost all of the pests and diseases and harvesting. respondents applied inducers like ethel or calcium carbide to produce off season fruits. The same group also practiced decrowning to produce bigger fruits. The management practices employed in ratooning pineapple were weeding, fertilization, application of inducers, decrowning, control of pests and diseases and harvesting. Weeding were usually done three times before harvesting the ratooned fruits. Majority of the respondents con- trolled pests and diseases by removing the infected. plants and by chemical treatment. Generally, farmers hired laborers in harvesting. All respondents used. 21-0-0 fertilizers. There was a marked similarity between the management practices employed in first crop and ratoon crop and their inputs. In first crop and ratoon crop management practices were found insignificant to outputs. The most frequently mentioned problems of the in first crop producers was rotting of plants. ratoon pineapple production fluctuation of prices was the common problem encountered by the farmers.
