Abstract: BAYBAY, TYRONE D., BERIÑA, NATHANIEL A., CASTILLO, KIM SHAIRA R., PANAGUITON, HANNAH MIKAELLA T., AND POLIAS, KATHRYN FAYE C. Knowledge and Perception of Elderly People toward Telehealth Consultation in Dasmariñas City, Cavite During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Medical technology. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. July 2022. Adviser: Ms. Nenita B. Panaligan, RN, MAN This study was conducted in Dasmariñas City, Cavite from February to June 2021. It aimed to determine the correlation of demographic profile to knowledge, and knowledge to the perception of elderly people toward telehealth consultation during the COVID-19 pandemic, after specifically determining the demographic profile, available telecommunication resources, the knowledge and perception regarding telehealth consultation of elderly people. A descriptive-correlational study comprised of 106 elderlies -determined using purposive-sampling technique, have responded. They were based on the inclusion criteria which are: (1) 60 years old and above; (2) residents of Dasmarinas City, Cavite during the COVID-19 pandemic; (3) regardless of if they have experienced telehealth consultation or not. The researchers sought for the authorization from the Ethics Review Board of Cavite State University to ensure that there would be no ethical problems overlooked and a pilot test was done before the actual conduct of the study. The 106 respondents were comprised mostly of ages 60 to 69-year-old females, high school graduates and undergraduates, and with monthly family income amounting Php 5,001 to Php 15,000. Majority of them have mobile phones and internet access via Wi-Fi as their telecommunication (ICT) resources. Even though the results imply that most of the elderlies have minimal knowledge (median=2; disagree) of the existence of, and use of telecommunication devices for, telehealth consultation, they perceived its services as of good quality and reliable since it is run by registered and licensed healthcare providers; seeing it as important nowadays, effective in diagnosis of minor illness, cost and time-efficient alternative to traditional face-to-face consultation despite of the perceived difficulty of operation for the elderlies. Using the Sommer’s Delta, demographic profile: age (p=0.000) and educational attainment (p=0.000) resulted a significant correlation between the knowledge of the elderlies. Using Sommer’s Delta and Pearson Chi-Square with Cramer's V coefficient, Sex (p=0.334), barangay (p=0.084), and monthly family income (p=0.090) demonstrated no significant relationship with the knowledge of the elderlies. More so, after application of Sommer’s Delta, the result demonstrated no significant relationship between knowledge and perception (p=0.233) of elderly people in Dasmariñas City, Cavite. Nonetheless, the COVID-19 pandemic steers the adaptation of telemedicine and teleconsultation in some part of the Philippines -that is a good alternative for our vulnerable population. Provision of interventions such as seminars and training for the elderlies and healthcare providers is highly recommended for an improved communication and healthcare environment. Conducting studies with an unbiased sampling method is highly encouraged for a more accurate representation of the population, resulting in better results. Moreover, studies involving different target populations could also be done to the healthcare professionals and the heads of the families.
