Abstract: PORNILLOS, HENRY D., Assessment of Biosecurity Practices and Readiness against African Swine Fever of Small-Hold Swine Farmers in the Municipality of Nabua, Camarines Sur. Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2022. Adviser: Desiree C. Del Mundo, DVM. The study was conducted from March to May 2022 in the Municipality of Nabua, Camarines Sur, to assess the biosecurity practices and readiness of small-hold swine farmers in the municipality. Specifically, the study aimed to: 1. determine the demographic profiles of selected small-hold swine raisers in the area; 2. determine the current biosecurity practices of selected small-hold swine farms in terms of isolation, farm traffic and sanitation and disease management; 3. Assess the awareness and readiness of small-hold swine raisers to possible African Swine Fever infection to their farms. Purposive sampling was used in selecting the two hundred six (206) small-hold swine farmer-respondent. Questionnaires provided on biosecurity practices and African Swine Fever awareness are either administered or self-administered to the small-hold swine farmers with the assistance of the designated barangay biosecurity officers / barangay animal health workers present on the different barangays within the municipality. The study exhibited the different portions of responses from pig raisers characterizing their biosecurity and their awareness & readiness against African Swine Fever (ASF), in the Municipality of Nabua, Camarines Sur. Basic biosecurity practices are seemingly practiced by the small-hold pig raisers while recognizing the potential impact of African Swine Fever to the swine industry. Some portions of the respondents still lack appropriate perception towards African Swine Fever, its potential harm to their piggeries and the appropriate response in case the disease hit their herd. Overall, the biosecurity practices carried out by the small-hold swine farmers still greatly varies amongst each other despite their similarities on their husbandry practice, which should be improved since biosecurity is the most effective and practically the broad spectrum approach towards the devastating African Swine Fever.
