Abstract: BAHALA, CHRISTINE ANN B. Comparative Analysis of Selected Articles in the Lifestyle Section of Philippine Daily Inquirer and The Manila Bulletin Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication major in Journalism. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2010. Adviser: Ms. Lisette A. Diloy. This study was conducted to analyze and compare the Lifestyle Section Monday issues published in the two newspapers, Philippine Daily Inquirer and The Manila Bulletin. Specifically, it aimed to determine the kinds of feature articles used by the two newspapers; the subjects used in writing the articles of the two newspapers; the figurative languages used on the art-related articles; the writing structure reflected in the art-related articles of the two newspapers; and the similarities and differences between Philippine Daily Inquirer and The Manila Bulletin in presenting art-related articles in the Lifestyle Section Monday issues from July to September 2009 Comparative analysis and descriptive methods were used in this study. Specifically, the thematic table was used to interpret and analyze the articles related to arts in the lifestyle section. The results of the study were as follows: The Manila Bulletin commonly used informative feature articles and often used the visual arts as their subject of discussion. It used only seven out of ten types of figurative languages, namely: analogy, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, and allusion. On the other hand, Philippine Daily Inquirer frequently used news feature type of articles and usually used performing arts as their subject of discussion. Simile was the most common type of figurative language used by both newspapers. It was also observed that some articles used more than one type of figurative languages each article. The Manila Bulletin and Philippine Daily Inquirer commonly used the inverted pyramid structure in writing their articles. Both of the newspapers did not use "How-To" feature article in their Lifestyle Section Monday issues.
