Abstract: ERNI, MARILOU MARAGAT. Labor Use Patterns of Households in Selected Cities and Municipalities of Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics Major in Business Economics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. November 2010. Adviser Ms. Ma. Soledad M. Lising. This study was conducted to determine the labor use patterns in selected cities and municipalities of Cavite. Specifically, to (1) determine the demographic characteristics of households in selected cities and municipalities of Cavite; (2) determine the labor use patterns of households in terms of participation and employment, status of employment, nature of work, and monthly income; (3) ascertain the relationship between the selected variables (such as household size, gender, marital status, age, and educational attainment) and the labor use patterns in terms of participation and employment, status of employment, nature of work, and monthly income; and, (4) identify the existing problems encountered by the households in related to labor participation. From a total of 14,484 households in 10 cities and municipalities in Cavite, which include Dasmarinas City, Carmona, Silang, Tagaytay City, Noveleta, Maragondon, Mendez, Amadeo, Trece Martires City, and Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, 200 households’ respondents were surveyed to gather the necessary information for this study from July to August 2010. Data were analyzed using frequency count, percentage, rank, and mean. The chi-square test was used to determine the relationship between the selected demographic variables (household size, gender, marital status, age, and educational attainment) and the labor use patterns in terms of participation and non-participation, status of employment, nature of work, and monthly income. Statistics calculator software was used in calculating the chi-square value of the variables. The findings revealed that the average household size has five members. Most of the respondents were married female, belonging to age group of 15 to 31 years, and have reached college level. Noveleta had the highest number of total labor force while Dasmarinas City recorded the least number of total labor force. More than half of the total labor force was employed. Members of the household were usually wage and salary workers and worked under the industry sector. The income of the members of the household ranged from zero to PhP65,000, with an average income of PhP9,810.42. Bulk of the working people was low income earners. Educational attainment was found to have significant relationship to labor use patterns. Respondents experienced low salary as their major problem in their present employment. The presence of the young children members was the reason for the unemployment of the household members in the labor force.
