Panaligan, RN, MAN Ethical decision making tackles many pressing issues facing the healthcare profession. In order to chart a problem-solving course, all healthcare professionals involved need specific tools to assist in this endeavor. Understanding the ethical shop talk prepares the healthcare professional for the extraordinary demands of today's high-tech medical environment. Ethical precepts and principles contained within the described ethical systems can help the nursing professional to conceptualize a problem-solving approach to assist in resolving the ethical dilemma (El, 2008). This study was conducted to determine the ethical decision making carried out among nurses in selected hospitals in Cavite. Specifically this aimed to describe the demographic profile of the staff nurses. It Also aimed to determine the common situations which need ethical decision making in the selected areas and determine the common basis for ethical decision making being executed in the identified situations. And determine the significant relationship between socio demographic profile of nurses in terms of gender, age, civil status, religion and years of experience related to ethical decision making among nurses. And lastly, determine the significant relationship between common situation and common basis for ethical decision being applied in the areas. This study was conducted from the 2nd week of February in General Emilio Aguinaldo Hospital, San Lorenzo Ruiz Hospital, Medical Center Imus, Our lady of Pilar Medical Center and in Manuel V. Santiago Hospital located in the province of Cavite. The study employed a descriptive research method and used random sampling which the researcher got the list of the registered nurses in the five selected hospitals and picked the respondent by using draw lots in each hospital. Twenty respondents were selected per hospital with a total of 100 respondents. Researcher used a survey form in this study that determined the ethical decision making among nurses in selected hospitals in Cavite. The survey contains questions about the: Part I, demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of: sex, age, civil status, religion and years of experience; Part II, the common situations and dilemma encountered which needs ethical decision making composed of 25 items; and Part IJ, common sources/ basis for application of ethical decision making among nurses is composed of 40 items with the total of 65 items. The data collected were treated statistically using mean, standard deviation, frequency distribution and pearson’s correlation coefficient. Majority of the nurses were female and in the range of 20-25 years old and single. Most of them were catholic and with at least one year of experience in the hospital. The findings of the study revealed that there was no significant relationship between the socio demographic profiles of nurses on their ethical decision making and also there was no significant difference between the nurses’ demographic profile and the basis for ethical decision making. It is always based on the ethical principle which is the standard rules and regulations followed by nurses in decision making. The findings of the study accepted the second null hypothesis, since the significant value 0.54 was greater than critical value at 0.05 level (Sig<0.05). Therefore there was a significant relationship between decision making and application of ethical principles. The findings of the study revealed that out of the four given situations, medication administration was commonly practiced. Autonomy was the commonly applied ethical principle in situations giving informed consent, do not resuscitate order, medication administration and withdrawing life support.
