Abstract: ALCANTARA, GIULLANA L., ALVAREZ, ROWELYN S., ARARACAP, JENINE J., AND AVENDULA, ALNEL M., “EFFECTS OF SEXUAL EDUCATION PROGRAM AMONG HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS AT DASMARINAS CAVITE,”. Research problem. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, College of Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April Adviser: Ms. Divinia Joy C. Tuzon, RN, USRN, MAN This study was conducted to identify the effects of sex education on high school students exposed to the program. Specifically, this study aimed to: determine the demographic profile of students; determine the level of awareness among high school students; determine the level of knowledge among high school students; know the significant difference in the level of awareness in sex education among high school students in terms of their awareness before and after exposure to the program; know the significant difference in the level of knowledge in sex education of high school students in terms of their knowledge before and after exposure to the program; determine the difference between the level of awareness and knowledge among high school students when grouped according to: age, gender, year level, and school category. This study was conducted in different schools in Dasmarinas City, namely: Dasmarinas National High School, Paliparan National High School, Congressional National High School, Dasma North National High School, Christ the King School of Cavite College Foundation Inc., Blessed Mary Academy, Jesus Christ King of Kings Lord of Lords School Foundation, and Vel Maris. To identify the target population, Slovin’s formula and sample proportion was used. Stratified random sampling technique was also utilized. The researchers used a total population of 224 students composed of 68 first year, 56 second year, 54 third year, and 46 fourth year high school students. The first year level had the highest percentage among the other year levels with 30.4%, followed by the second year with 25.0°A and third year with 24.1 %. The lowest percentage was the fourth year students having a percentage of 20.5%, which was composed of 46 students. The highest percentage of respondents in terms of age was 14 with 51 students (22.8%). It was then followed by the age groups of 13 with 48 students (21.4%), 12 (21.0%), 15 (17.4%), 16 (13.8%), 17 (3.1%). The lowest frequency and percentage was in the age group of 18 (.4%) with only one respondent. Questionnaires were provided for every student to fill up and answer. It was divided into three sections. The first part focused on the demographic profile of the respondents such as age, gender, year level, and school category. The second part involved the knowledge assessment which contained 35 items. The third part contained the assessment for the level of awareness of students. Out of 224 respondents, results revealed in pretest that majority of the student respondents are moderately aware about sex. Specifically they are moderately aware that having sex with different person will increase the probability of acquiring STI's, boys are more curious than girls, premarital sex is a sin, sex education is important in school curriculum, and sex is sacred. It all ranges in 3.5 and 4.20. It was then followed by the slightly unaware and aware. Through the lecture, the majority of the students increase their awareness regarding sex. They increase their awareness in sex before marriage is a sin. They become aware that having an early relationship could lead to premarital sex. Also, that sex education is important in the curriculum of schools; they also got an idea that mass media could affect their perception about sex education. A mean that ranged from 3.5-4.20 implies that students are moderately aware of the likelihood to acquire sexually transmitted disease during intercourse. Having the mean that ranges from 1.9-2.60 students are slightly unaware when it comes to the importance of sex in a relationship, doing sex with or without love, and watching porn movies that will help them increase their awareness. During the pretest, most of the students belonged in the fair group 113(50.2%). The good gained 58(25.8%) then followed by the poor group which had 48(21.3%). The lowest in number was the students who got an average level was 5 (2.2%). During the posttest, the highest number was still the fair with 92(40.9%). Its corresponding number, together with the good 32(14.2%) and poor 5(2.2%) were lowered down and scattered to other groups. The average group increased with the value of 77(34.2%). From the pretest no one got any excellent grade but for the posttest they gained 18(8.0%). Students have a low level of knowledge before the lecture and gain understanding after the exposure. The result shows that some of the students got an excellent rate after the study. Statistical analysis shows that after exposure of students in sex education program will likely increase their awareness and knowledge about sex. The greater the exposure to the program, the greater the chance that teenagers will avoid premarital sex and soon will practice safe sex.
