SAMANIEGO, Birth Experiences as Perceived by Primigravida in Different Birthing Institutions in Selected Municipalities of Cavite, January to June 2011. This study was conducted to determine the perception of first time mothers (primigravida) who had their normal vaginal delivery from January to June 2011 based on their birth experiences in different birthing institutions, namely hospitals, lying-in clinics, and home births in three selected municipalities of Cavite. Specifically, this study sought to conclude the birth experiences of primigravida as to the characteristics of the birthing institutions (birth setting and the care provided by the birth attendants), and mother’s physiological and psychological birth experiences. Sample population of primigravidas who had full term and normal spontaneous delivery from January to June 2011 was selected through two-stage purposive random sampling. The data were gathered by utilizing a non-standardized parametric checklist questionnaire. Results showed that the majority of the respondents had their first child birth in the hospital while a small portion of the respondents chose to give birth in lying-in clinics and home birth settings. Birthing institutions have significant relationships on primigravidas’ birth experiences. The results also showed that the birth institutions are highly conducive when it comes to their physical characteristics but home setting has the most favorable set up compared to lying- in clinics and hospitals. Birthing institutions affected the birth experiences of primigravidas physiologically and psychologically.
