This study was conducted to determine the level of competencies in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude of Level III nursing students of Cavite State University Class 2013 in caring for mothers after delivery (post-partum care). It specially aimed to determine the demographic characteristics of selected Level III Nursing Students of Cavite State University, determine the level of competency of Level III CvSU Nursing students in performing postpartum care in terms of knowledge, skill and attitude; identify the effect of age, gender and civil status on the level of competency of nursing student; identify the effect of frequency of performing postpartum care on the level of competency of nursing student; determine the existing relationship between the knowledge and skills, knowledge and attitude and skills and attitudes.
The study used the descriptive method. The respondents of the study were Level Ill CvSU nursing students. The researchers had two sets of questionnaire: cognitive examination composed of a 35 — item questionnaire regarding maternal postpartum care and checklists used by clinical instructors to evaluate the skills and attitude of the Level III nursing students in performing postpartum care.
Percentages, means, One-Way Analysis of Variable (ANOVA) of F-test, T-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coeffecient were used to analyze the data.
Results revealed that age and gender do not affect their level of competencies in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude; the frequency of performing postpartum care does not affect their level of competency in terms of skills and attitude but affects their level of competency im terms of knowledge. There is no significant difference on the level of competencies (knowledge, skills and attitude) of Level III nursing students of Cavite State University when grouped according to age and gender. It was also found out that in terms of knowledge, the respondents were categorized as satisfactory, and in the field of skills and attitude, and the respondents were categorized as excellent.
There is a significant relationship between knowledge and skill. There is also a significant relationship between knowledge and attitude and skills and attitude.
